Arrive at Paro by one of the most spectacular flights in the Himalayas, offering breathtaking aerial views of snow-capped peaks. Upon landing, complete immigration formalities and meet your representative before driving to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. En route, stop at Chuzom, the picturesque confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers, adorned with Tibetan, Nepalese, and Bhutanese stupas. Visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple linked to the legendary bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo, and enjoy a short walk across the traditional iron chain bridge. Upon arrival in Thimphu, check into your hotel. In the evening, visit the King’s Memorial Chorten, where locals gather to offer prayers and spin prayer wheels. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
After breakfast, explore Thimphu’s cultural highlights starting with a visit to Buddha Dordenma, a huge golden statue overlooking the valley, radiating peace and spirituality. Continue to the National Library, home to ancient Buddhist manuscripts, followed by the Textile Museum, showcasing Bhutan’s rich weaving traditions. Visit the interactive Simply Bhutan Museum to experience traditional Bhutanese life and architecture. Later, explore Pangri Zampa Monastery, one of the oldest in Bhutan, where monks study astrology and Buddhist philosophy. Conclude your day with a visit to the majestic Trashichhoedzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body, followed by a stroll through the local craft bazaar. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Gangtey via Dochula Pass (3,050 m), offering panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas on clear days. Continue through dense forests of rhododendron and oak into the tranquil Phobjikha Valley. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and visit the historic Gangtey Monastery, the largest Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan. The surrounding valley, known for its wide open landscapes, is also the winter home of the rare black-necked cranes. Spend the evening soaking in the peaceful ambiance of this glacial valley. After breakfast, enjoy a gentle hike along the Gangtey Nature Trail, one of Bhutan’s most scenic walks, passing through meadows, forests, and traditional villages. The trail offers stunning views of the Phobjikha Valley and a chance to observe rural life. After lunch, visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre to learn about these rare migratory birds and the region’s ecosystem. Spend the rest of the day exploring the serene valley with its winding rivers and untouched landscapes. Overnight stay in Gangtey.
After breakfast, drive to Punakha, descending into a warmer valley known for its fertile lands. En route, visit Chimi Lhakhang, the famous Fertility Temple associated with the “Divine Madman” Drukpa Kunley. A pleasant walk through rice fields leads to this sacred site, where couples seek blessings for fertility and happiness. Upon arrival in Punakha, check into your hotel and enjoy the serene riverside setting. Overnight stay in Punakha.
After breakfast, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful fortresses, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. This architectural masterpiece holds immense historical and religious significance. Later, drive back to Paro via scenic mountain roads. Upon arrival, visit Ta Dzong (National Museum), showcasing Bhutanese art, history, and culture, followed by a walk to Rinpung Dzong, known for its stunning architecture and intricate murals. After breakfast, embark on a memorable hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched dramatically on a cliff 900 meters above the Paro Valley. This sacred site is deeply revered in Bhutanese culture and offers breathtaking views along the trail. After returning, visit Drukgyel Dzong ruins, a historic fortress with views of Mount Chomolhari (weather permitting), and experience traditional Bhutanese village life. Overnight stay in Paro. Optional: Full-day excursion to Haa Valley via Chele La Pass, offering stunning alpine scenery and a glimpse into one of Bhutan’s least-visited regions.
